Cabinet Convenes to Address Land Subsidence in Iran

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Iranian cabinet held a meeting on Sunday to discuss the problem of land subsidence and devise plans to prevent a crisis.

The cabinet of ministers, chaired by President Masoud Pezeshkian, discussed the land subsidence challenge that has arisen across Iran in recent years.

Participants in the meeting discussed a detailed report by Head of the Department of Environment Shina Ansari on the root causes of land sinking and ways to avert it in Iran.

The cabinet members also exchanged views on the demands of various organizations and the issues they are facing.

Many areas of Iran have been affected by groundwater loss and land subsidence in recent years.

A number of Iranian provinces face a greater risk of irreversible depletion and damages to their groundwater reservoirs, with some of them potentially facing permanent loss.

Land subsidence occurs when large amounts of groundwater have been withdrawn from certain types of rocks, such as fine-grained sediments.
