Lebanese Speaker Sends Condolences over Iran Plane Crash

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri expressed sympathy with the Iranian government and nation over Sunday's deadly plane crash near a residential area in the capital Tehran.

Berri offered condolences to the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei as well as senior Iranian officials including President Hassan Rouhani.

The Antonov An-140 (Iran-140) aircraft belonging to a domestic airline crashed in a residential area in the west of the capital city of Tehran on Sunday morning.

It was destined for the eastern city of Tabas, but crashed shortly after take-off from the Mehrabad Airport. At least 39 passengers have been killed so far. No information is available on the cause of the crash.

After the fatal crash, Minister of Road and Urban Development Abbas Akhondi assigned a team from Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization the job of investigating the cause of the incident.

The Antonov An-140 commercial passenger airplane is a twin-engine turbojet aircraft, which can accommodate up to 100 passengers.

After purchasing the production license for the An-140 from Ukraine in 2000, Iran built its first Iran-140 passenger plane in 2003.
