Senior MP Highlights Iran's "Permanent" Support for Syria
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Chairman of the Iranian Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi said Iran is proud of supporting the Syrian nation and government and will never stop backing Damascus.
“Our support for the government and people of Syria is a permanent support and we are proud of it,” Boroujerdi said in a Thursday press conference in Damascus, capital of Syria.
He further referred to Syria’s fight against terrorism, and said, “We are sure that the people of Syria are capable of defeating the aggression due to their army’s awareness and resistance.”
The Iranian lawmaker also deplored certain regional countries for supporting terrorism, saying that these countries have turned to an instrument for the implementation of US projects in the Middle East.
“Qatar and Turkey are among countries that supported ISIL (Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant) and al-Nusra Front terrorist groups from the beginning,” he added.
Earlier on Wednesday, Boroujerdi also held a meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, during which the Iranian MP expressed Tehran’s readiness to support Syria till the crisis in the country is over, adding that no force in the world can disturb relations between Tehran and Damascus.
During the meeting, Assad and Boroujerdi discussed developments in the region and highlighted the support that some western and regional countries lend to terrorists who are used as pawns to fight for the interests of countries backing them at the cost of the region's instability and people’s lives.
The development comes as Syrian government forces backed by fighters from the Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah have managed to drive terrorists out of an area in the strategic Qalamoun region, north of Damascus and along the border with neighboring Lebanon.
The joint forces established full control over the Jibba Barrens district, and destroyed a number of vehicles rigged with explosives that the terrorists were planning to use in order to target the Lebanese territories.
