Iran, Iraq, Syria Cooperation to Benefit Regional Peace: Senior MP

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Chairman of the Iranian Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi highlighted the significance of regional cooperation among Tehran, Baghdad, and Damascus.

Enhanced cooperation among Iran, Iraq, and Syria is effective on restoring peace and security to the region and eradication of terrorism, Boroujerdi said.

He made the remarks in a Wednesday meeting with the visiting Syrian Interior Minister Mohammad Ibrahim al-Shaar here in Tehran.

He further referred to recent agreements between Iranian and Syrian interior ministers, and highlighted the importance of such agreements and negotiations between the two countries.

Boroujerdi also reaffirmed the continued support of the Iranian nation and government for Damascus, saying that Iran will always stand by the Syrian people both in times of hardship and success.

Al-Shaar, for his part, appreciated Iran's spiritual aid and efforts in support of his country, and stressed the "important" role Iran plays in assisting the Arab country in its fight against terrorism.

Increased cooperation between Iranian and Syrian authorities can be effective in overcoming the ongoing crisis in the region and disappointing state-sponsors of terrorism, he underlined.

The Syrian official referred to a "coalition of the US, the Zionist regime, and their regional allies like Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Turkey" as supporters of terrorism in the region.

They are trying to undermine the Syrian resistance by helping terrorist groups and providing financial and arms support for them, Al-Shaar went on to say.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with Takfiri terrorists from the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) currently controlling parts of it, mostly in the east.

According to the United Nations, more than 220,000 people have been killed and one million wounded during the conflict.

In the meantime, Iran has remained a close ally of Syria and supports its legitimate government in the face of foreign-backed militancy.
