Islamabad Power Import from Iran to Rise Tenfold: Pakistani Official
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Islamabad plans to increase its electricity imports from Iran tenfold following the conclusion of nuclear talks between Iran and world powers in Vienna in July, a Pakistani official said.
“Iran currently exports around 100 megawatts (MW) of electricity to the areas of Pakistan that border Iran. Pakistan is in the final stages of negotiating a deal that will increase that to 1,000 MW,” Reuters quoted Zafar Yab Khan, Pakistan’s spokesman for the Ministry of Water and Power, on Tuesday.
"It's likely to be finalized shortly," he added. "The power purchase agreement would include a transmission line."
The move by Pakistan comes as foreign countries and companies are rushing to rekindle business with Tehran after the conclusion of diplomatic talks between Iran and the six powers on July 14 in Vienna.
Dubbed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the deal would subject the parties to comply with a series of commitments, resulting in the termination of sanctions on Iran in exchange for certain restrictions on Tehran’s nuclear program during a defined period of time.
Experts believe that Iran’s economic growth would rise remarkably after the final nuclear deal takes effect.
