Zarif Offers Condolences over Death of Iraq’s Chalabi

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif offered his condolences on Wednesday over the death of Iraqi politician Ahmad Chalabi.

The veteran Iraqi politician, who purportedly played a role in persuading the United States to wage the 2003 war against Iraq, died of a heart attack in Iraqi capital Baghdad at the age of 70.

In a message, Iran’s foreign minister extended his condolences on Wednesday to the Iraqi government, parliament, and Chalabi’s family on the demise of the renowned politician.

Chalabi is survived by his wife Leila Osseiran, the daughter of the prominent Lebanese politician Adil Osseiran, and their four children, including Tamara Chalabi, a well-known author.

The Iraqi politician was a vocal opponent of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein and spent decades in the US and the United Kingdom in exile.

He returned to his country after Saddam’s downfall following the US invasion of Iraq in 2003.  At one point his name was floated as a candidate for prime minister but he never managed to rise to the top of Iraq's politics.
