Asian Countries Appreciate Iran’s Role in Regional Security: Velayati
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Head of the Strategic Research Center of Iran’s Expediency Council Ali Akbar Velayati said Asian countries recognize the role Iran plays in enhancing regional security.
Speaking late on Thursday upon his return from a five-day trip to Singapore and Malaysia, Velayati said South and Southeast states seek to expand their ties with the Islamic Republic as they recognize the role Iran plays in maintaining security in the West Asia region.
“These countries are aware that the stability in Iran is decisive not only for Iran but for regional security,” he said, adding that they are appreciative of the help Iran has provided for improvement of security in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Yemen and the Islamic Republic’s recent support for the legitimate government of Turkey.
Velayati further highlighted the potentials for expansion of relations between Iran and countries in South and Southeast Asia, saying that the Islamic Republic can be a transit route between these countries and Central Asia and Russia.
He also referred to his talks with the prime minister and foreign minister of Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur, saying that the Malaysian officials have stressed the need for enhancement of Tehran-Kuala Lumpur ties.
Velayati had travelled to Malaysia after attending the third South Asian Diaspora Convention (SADC) in Singapore.
The 3rd SADC was held on 18-19 July with the participation of more than 50 of the region’s leading policymakers and business leaders, academics and civil society leaders.
The speakers discussed and debated critical topics in business, economy and policy that would affect the region’s future and its role in global geopolitics in the 21st century.
