Iranian FM Praises Castro’s Struggle against Imperialism

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif paid tribute to late Cuban leader Fidel Castro for his constant concern for developing countries and his efforts in the fight against imperialism.

At a visit to residence of Cuba’s ambassador to Tehran on Sunday, the Iranian foreign minister wrote a note in a memorial notebook in commemoration of Castro, who died on Friday at the age of 90.

In his note, Zarif praised the deceased for his concern about situation of people in developing countries.

He also acknowledged “Commander Castro” as an unmatched figure in Latin America’s recent history, saying he always cared about unity among developing countries and pushed for countering arrogance and imperialism.

Fidel Castro was born in 1926 to a Spanish immigrant father and a Cuban mother. He took power in a 1959 revolution and ruled Cuba for 49 years with a mix of charisma and iron will, creating a one-party state and becoming a central figure in the Cold War.

The Cuban government has announced a funeral for Castro on December 4. Havana also announced nine days of mourning.
