Uzbekistan Claims Historic Win Over Iran: President’s Cup
TEHRAN (Tasnim) - In an all-Asian encounter, Uzbekistan handball team beat Iran 37-32 in their opening match of the IHF President's Cup on Thursday.
For the Uzbek team, who is playing in its second World Championship after participating in 1997, this is a historic result as it had never won a match at this level before.
“We are very happy with our first win at this level. The girls showed character, and when we changed the defense to a more active system, we improved a lot,” Uzbekistan head coach Zafar Azimov said.
For Iran, Player of the Match Elnaz Ghasemi scored nine goals from 10 attempts, but although she showed a good performance, her team suffered its fourth straight defeat.
