Tehran, Ankara May Open New Border Crossing: Official

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The governor of Iran’s West Azarbaijan province announced that a new border crossing is likely to be opened between Iran and Turkey.

Speaking in a session of the Strategic Council of Foreign Relations in West Azarbaijan province on Saturday, Mohammad Sadegh Mo’tamedian said this border crossing will help the expansion of bilateral economic relations.

He pointed to the recent visit of a trade and economic delegation from this province to the eastern regions of Turkey and the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at the expansion of bilateral ties and emphasized that strengthening infrastructures at the border is the most important factor in developing relations between the two countries.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Mo’tamedian said that developing tourism is one of the other fields of cooperation between Tehran and Ankara.

Attracting tourists from neighboring Turkey should be taken into serious consideration, he emphasized.

The West Azarbaijan province is Iran’s only border province with Turkey which has a 550-km border distance with this country.
