Three US Soldiers Killed in Drone Attack near Syria-Jordan Border
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A drone attack on Tower 22, a small US outpost near the Syria-Jordan border, resulted in the deaths of three American troops and left over 30 others injured.
The incident, occurring on Sunday, marked the first instance of US troops being killed in the region since the onset of the Gaza war in early October.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed the casualties in a statement, revealing that the one-way drone attack impacted the base. According to CENTCOM, "On January 28, three US service members were killed and 25 injured from a one-way attack UAS that impacted at a base in northeast Jordan, near the Syria border."
A US official informed Reuters that at least 34 service members were under examination for possible traumatic brain injuries following the attack.
The Islamic Resistance in Iraq claimed responsibility for the drone attack on Al-Tanf base at the Syria-Jordan border. In December, US officials reported 97 attacks on military bases housing American troops in Iraq and Syria since October 17.
Hamas, the Palestinian resistance movement, conveyed a message to the United States regarding the incident. Senior Hamas spokesperson Sami Abu Zuhri stated, "The killing of three American soldiers is a message to the American administration that unless the killing of innocent people in Gaza stops, it must confront the entire Ummah." He added, "The continuation of the American-Zionist aggression against Gaza is capable of setting the entire region ablaze."
The Palestinian Islamic Jihad condemned the US administration's warning of potential escalation, asserting that the attack on American forces was a "natural and legitimate response to the US presence as an occupying force in our region." The movement cited the United States' shameless support for the Israeli regime's actions in the Gaza Strip as a motivating factor.
Amid escalating tensions in the region due to Israel's ongoing war against the Gaza Strip, the latest drone attack adds another layer to the complexities of the situation. Since the commencement of the Israeli aggression on October 7, more than 26,400 Palestinians, predominantly women and children, have been killed.
