Iran, Iraq Warn Terrorism Threat Extends Beyond Syria

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Iran and Iraq stress that the resurgence of terrorism in Syria poses a wider regional threat, urging collective action as their foreign ministers meet in Baghdad for critical trilateral talks with Syria.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, upon arriving in Baghdad, highlighted Syria’s delicate situation, emphasizing the need for regional consultations.

Speaking to reporters, Araqchi stated, "Initiatives will take shape during the discussions," signaling the importance of collaborative approaches.

According to Iran’s state news agency IRNA, both Iran and Iraq share deep concerns over developments in Syria, identifying the revival of terrorist groups there as part of a broader agenda benefiting the United States and Israel.

The two nations believe that the spread of terrorism will not remain confined to Syria but will spill over into neighboring countries, further destabilizing the region.

Araqchi’s visit coincides with a tripartite meeting between the foreign ministers of Iran, Iraq, and Syria aimed at evaluating the situation in Syria and its implications for regional peace and security.

One contentious issue on the agenda is foreign intervention in Syria to support the legitimate government of Bashar al-Assad against US-backed terrorist groups.

Russia, a key ally of Assad, has actively participated in military operations against terrorist positions alongside Syrian forces, complementing its diplomatic efforts with decisive action.

Iran’s Foreign Minister, in earlier remarks, noted that Tehran is prepared to consider dispatching troops to Syria should Damascus formally request assistance.

The Baghdad meeting is particularly significant given the shared vision of Iran, Iraq, and Syria and their coordinated efforts to address the crisis.

Their previous collaboration, alongside Russia, in a quadrilateral coalition was instrumental in defeating Daesh (ISIS or ISID) within a span of three years, culminating in a major victory in 2017.

Upon arrival in Baghdad, Araqchi and his delegation paid tribute to late commanders Lt. Gen. Qassem Soleimani and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis by offering prayers at their memorial.

This official visit marks Araqchi’s ongoing diplomatic efforts to discuss regional security and strengthen bilateral relations, particularly concerning Syria’s future.

Araqchi is set to hold talks with Iraq’s Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein and Syria’s Foreign Minister Bassam Sabbaq, underscoring the importance of unified strategies in managing current challenges.
