Iran’s Technical Delegation Visit Hydrometric Station of Hirmand River in Afghanistan

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A technical delegation from Iran paid a visit to the Dehrawud Hydrometric Station in upstream side of Kajaki Dam on the Hirmand River in Afghanistan for the first time since Hirmand River Treaty was signed in 1972.

Iranian Deputy Minister of Energy for Water and Wastewater Affairs Mohammad Javanbakht pointed to the request of Iran’s commissioner for visiting Dehrawud Hydrometric Station and added, “Under the treaty, it was agreed that when the supply of Iran’s water share from the Hirmand River is not met by the Afghanistan government, the station should be visited at the request of the Iranian side.”

After observing the water level of the river at Dehrawud Hydrometric Station, the Iranian expert panel demanded the delivery of the water share to Iran, he said, adding it was agreed that the method of delivery of the water share will be decided in the meetings of the Technical Committee in the near future.

The commissioners had not been given the go-ahead to visit Dehrawud Hydrometric Station in the past, but with the incessant efforts and diplomatic coordination of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the ground was set for them to visit the site for the first time, Javanbakht stated.

A delegation consisting of the director general of border rivers and joint waters of the Ministry of Energy, CEO of the Sistan and Baluchistan Regional Water Company and the deputy governor general of the province have visited the station, he added.
